Defending Champions Eliminated

14 Feb 2018

New winners will be found in the Ryman Healthcare Men's and Women's Pairs, with both 2017 champions eliminated during the days action at The Trusts New Zealand Open.  With a largely dry day players were able to enjoy much better conditions at Blockhouse Bay Bowls.

There was drama mid afternoon when Marilyn McLeod collapsed on the green and had to be taken to hospital.  Our thoughts are with Marilyn and her family and we wish her a speedy recovery.  Jill Fraser stepped in as a substitute but with Elaine McClintock they were not able to recover and lost narrowly to Corinne Pritchard and Colleen Pert (Blockhouse Bay) 17-16.

On the Men's side of the competition 2017 champions Chris Le Lievre and Jamie Hill were beaten in the round of 16 by Duane McDonald and Gordon Smith, with the game going to the last end and a score of 13-12.

Both the men and women have reached the quarterfinal stage with these games along with the semifinals to be played on Friday morning.

Margaret Aldous and partner Marion Vague along with Corinne Pritchard and Colleen Pert have taken advantage of home green conditions to move into the last eight.  Aldous and Vague will take on Auckland Representative players Karen Hema and Linda Ralph.  The Carlton Cornwall pair recording two good wins to move into contention for the title.  Pritchard and Vague will play St Heliers' Catherine Bien and Ling Qu.

2015 Champion Lauren Mills and her new partner Chris Budge (Kensington) will play Lisa Helmling and Shelley Wilson for a semifinal spot.  The last quarterfinal sees Anne Bateman, the 2012 champion and Carol Bennett, the current Auckland Singles Champion, take on Lin East and Hilary Ross.

Joining McDonald and Smith in the last eight of the Ryman Healthcare Men's Pairs is Kevin Robinson and Wayne Wrack (Maungaturoto).  The winner of that match up will take on the winner of the game between Shane McGonagle, James Williams and Alistar Watson, Richie Muir.  Watson and Muir having made the trip north from Central Otago have had good results so far in both the pairs and singles.  They are also in the post section of the Hunter Bowls Men's Triples which starts Thursday.

The bottom half of the draw sees Teo Turua and Phil Taylor play Tony Garelja and Billy Fulton.  In the final quarterfinal Royal Oak's Mike Galloway and Martin Dixon will play Dennis Brewster and Larry Valance.

The pairs continue on Friday with the televised finals to be played on Sunday.
