Hunter Bowls Triples
12 Feb 2018
Normal service resumed today with a full day of qualifying completed in the Hunter Bowls Men's and Women's Triples at The Trusts New Zealand Open. Plenty of water still had to be removed from some greens while others were transferred to artificial greens after the rain over the past few days meant the original greens were not playable.
The Women's Triples was always going to be hotly contested with just 15 qualifying spots up for grabs and only an additional three non section winners spots. Jill Fraser, Clara Bowman and Judi Wong - last years finalists - showed they will once again be contenders with three good, albeit narrow wins in section play. The Farley triple of Chelsea, Tessa and Linda also topped their section, with the only hick up being a draw against the Kristin Stampa Composite team.
Margaret MacColl skipped her youthful team of Rebecca Jelley and Ashleigh Jeffcoat to two wins, only outdone by the combination of Aggie Motu, Kirsty Hill and Paris Baker who took out the section. MacColl did enough however, to secure one of the three additional places in the main draw.
The Hunter Bowls Men's Triples required 31 qualifiers to be found with 23 sections and 8 non section winners going through. The young team of Aiden Takarua, Alex Reed and Colin Williams (Pt Chevalier) were too strong for their opposition remaining undefeated. A number of other teams also had a good day with a maximum of three wins including 2014 champions Shane McGonagle, Noel Sutton and Owen Sutton (Composite).
With multiple National titles under their belt the team of Chris Le Lievre, Jamie Hill and Justin Goodwin had two wins before losing the last game of the day to Teo Turua, Ta Rito and Luka Mataora (Bridge Park)16-14. Both teams did enough to qualify however.
