Rain, Rain and some Bowls!

11 Feb 2018

Move the New Zealand Open to February they said, that is when the weather is good.  Who made that suggestion!!

Once again The Trusts New Zealand Open was beset by persistent rain throughout the day. With plenty of patience and perseverance three shortened rounds in the Ryman Healthcare Women's Pairs and two full rounds in The Trusts Men's Singles were completed.  Qualifiers have been found based on these results.  A big thank you to all our club volunteers, umpires, markers and players!

The pre-tournament favourites for The Trusts Men's Singles have all successfully navigated qualifying.  Chris Le Lievre (Musgrave Hill) had two good wins, although he was made to work hard by Ta Rito (Bridge Park) eventually recording a 21-16 win in the second game.  Rob Ashton, Mike Bradshaw, Ray Martin are also safely through.  Petar Sain qualifies as one of 12 additional qualifiers to make up the field of 64 with the 52 section winners.

In the Ryman Healthcare Women's Pairs an early decision was made to reduce games to 12 ends.  This meant three games were completed, although in very trying conditions for most.  Ashleigh Jeffcoat and Rebecca Jelley (Carlton Cornwall) are looming as strong contenders having completed the day undefeated.  Anne Bateman and Carol Bennett (Onehunga & Districts) also had three good wins.

2013 Champions Aggie Motu and Kirsty Hill, after a first round draw recorded two wins to take their section.  In total 31 combinations have qualified along with defending champions Elaine McClintock and Marilyn McLeod.

Tomorrow we have qualifying for the Hunter Bowls Men's and Women's Triples, and hopefully some better weather!
