South East take out the Canoe Tournament
25 Aug 2017
Bridge Park was once again the venue for the Canoe tournament held over the weekend of August 19th and 20th. The weather tried to spoil the event but bowls prevailed on the day. A heavy rain shower forced the players from the green during the third game on the Saturday flooding the greens. Once the water had been pushed off the green play was able to continue and allow all four rounds to be finished.
Even with the bad weather the players were in good spirits with 26 teams competing from the five zone coaching bases. Bowls North West moved to Hobsonville bowling club drawing 1 to 5 year players in from the North Harbour area which helped to bolster the numbers.
Play as usual at this level is competitive and the games produced some very good bowls. Such was the evenness of play the top eight teams wining through to the main Canoe event were fairly evenly spread through the zones.
The finalists played with determination, but as is the way with bowls not all the top players were in the top eight. The main event came down to teams skipped by C. Harold from Bowls N/W and L. Ferragal from South East. The game was worthy of being the final with both sides trading shots. Late in the game Harold held a slim lead only to be overtaken in the last two or three ends where Ferragal won the game.
The consolation event was run over four games of 1hr 20mins with only two teams winning all four games.
