Auckland 1-5 Year Pairs

14 May 2017

Two chilly but beautiful days for bowls in the Auckland Men's and Women's 1-5 Year Pairs. Headquarters is Mt Wellington Bowling Club.

Women's Semi-Final:

Lesley McLinden and Leeane Poulson (Mangere) beat Chelsea Farley and Tessa Farley (Balmoral Women's) it was a great game with Farley and Farley up on the score board first but McLinden and Poulson  fast to take the lead and hold onto it, with Balmoral Women's never far behind until the 10th end - from here Mangere moved it up a gear and won the next 4 ends giving them their spot into the Final 20-10.

Ling Qu and Sheila Putu (St Heliers) beat Kaye Wilson and Chris Staples (Kohimarama). This was a very different Semi-Final with it being neck and neck all the way to the end! Wilson and Staples started with a big 5 in the 2nd end with Qu and Putu coming back to tie up the game in the 5th end 6-6. From here Wilson and Staples took back their lead but not for long - Qu and Putu had a couple of good scoring ends giving them a 13-8 lead to St Heliers in the 9th end. Kohimarama came back in the 13th end to tie up the game 15-15. In the 15th end Qu and Putu won a crucial 5 giving them the lead 20-15. Wilson and Staples fought hard and came back to tie up the game 20-20 in the 17th end but it was all over when Qu and Putu won the 18th end 20-21 giving St Heliers their spot through to the Final.

Men's Quarter -Finals:

Jay Dayal and Mike Whynn (Blockhouse Bay) beat Adrianne Nancekivell and Jim Grey (Mt Albert) 14-12; Mark Posa and Roger Johnston (St Heliers) beat Mamae Taurua and John Lambarth (Onehunga) 18-13; Scott Harrison and Artem Chesnokov (Balmoral) beat Garry Cotter and Keith Earl (Pt Chevalier) 21-7; David Ball and Kevin Beasley (Mt Wellington) beat Padric Matich and Liam Rafferty (Mt Albert) 18-14.

Men's Semi-Finals:

Jay Dayal and Mike Whynn (Blockhouse Bay) played Mark Posa and Roger Johnston (St Heliers). It was a Blockhouse Bay game from the outset winning the first 4 ends before St Heliers came to play. From here Posa and Johnston put a bit more pressure on Dayal and Whynn but not enough to carry on - St Heliers conceding 18-7 in the 17th end. Jay Dayal and Mike Whynn go through to the Men's 1-5 Year Pairs Final.

Scott Harrison and Artem Chesnokov (Balmoral) played David Ball and Kevin Beasley (Mt Wellington). A great final with Mt Wellington starting strongly winning the first 2 ends well. From the 3rd end Harrison and Chesnokov won 6 ends in a row and lead 9- 5 in the 8th end. Ball and Beasley played well but just couldn't manage to close the gap Balmoral had created. Scott Harrison and Artem Chesnokov winning 19-11 after Mt Wellington conceded in the 17th end giving them their spot into the final.

Women's Final:

An awesome Final between Lesley McLinden and Leeane Poulson (Mangere) playing Ling Qu and Sheila Putu (St Heliers).. McLinden and Poulson came out firing and grabbed a good early lead which they held onto convincingly right up to the 14th end. Then Qu and Putu turned up their game and took the next 4 ends tying up the game 13-13 in the 18th end. In the extra end it was anyones game with Qu's first bowl sitting right up next to the jack only to have McLinden knocked the jack into the ditch - still in play. Qu played a great last shot only just missing out on nudging McLindens bowl away for the win.The Final score being 14 -13 to Lesley McLinden and Leeane Poulson making them the new Women's 1-5 Year Pairs Champions for 2016-2017.
