Auckland Club Championship Fours Finals

It has been an excellent weekend of bowls for the Men's and Women's Club Championship Fours being played today at Auckland Bowling Club, the sun was shining and gave all athletes a reprieve from playing in miserable conditions.

Semi-Finals

Men:

Gary Cotton, Kidd Enua, Loto Fakaalofa,Tom King (Mangere) vs Mike Galloway, Martin Dixon, Gavin Brown, James Gavin (Hillsboro) and Neville Hill, Graham King, Steve Bicknell, Charlie Symons (Onehunga & Districts) vs Frankie Taungahihifo, Allan Hansen, Ray Seaman, Utu Vave (Onehunga).

The Semi Final between Gary Cotton, Kidd Enua, Loto Fakaalofa,Tom King (Mangere) and Mike Galloway, Martin Dixon, Gavin Brown, James Gavin (Hillsboro) saw Hillsboro first on the scoreboard with Mangere following closely behind. Hilsboro continued their usual consistently strong play and won some great ends, Mangere stayed in the game but couldn't manage to close the gap that Hillsboro had created - the final score being 16-6 to Hillsboro taking them through to the Men's Club Championship Fours Final.

The second team through to the Finals is Frankie Taungahihifo, Allan Hansen, Ray Seaman, Utu Vave (Onehunga) who had a cracker of a Semi Final against Neville Hill, Graham King, Steve Bicknell, Charlie Symons (Onehunga & Districts). Onehunga & Districts were first up on the scoreboard with a 3 and were leading right up to the 9th end when Onehunga tied the game up 8-8 and from here Onehunga found their stride and took off to win their spot in the Club Championship Fours Final 13-10.

Final:

Mike Galloway, Martin Dixon, Gavin Brown, James Gavin (Hillsboro) continued  their winning streak beating Frankie Taungahihifo, Allan Hansen, Ray Seaman, Utu Vave (Onehunga) 19-5. Onehunga were first up on the scoreboard but let Hillsboro take the next 4 ends making the score 8-2 in the 5th end. Onehunga managed to win anoth 2 ends but it was a Hillsboro game with Onehunga conceding in the 12th end 19-5. Congratulations to Hillsboro.

Women:

Karen de Jongh, Bev Crowe, Helen van der Walt, LIz Badenhorst (Carlton Cornwall) vs Connie Cheng, Bett Leung, Virginia Leung, Bronwyn Pratt (Remuera) and Claire Lines, Donna Cross, Etsuko McKessack, Vivien Young (Mt Eden) vs Angela Temple, Gail Clark, Sue Scott, Jenny Stockford (Pt Chevalier).

First through to the Final in the Women's Club Championship Fours are Angela Temple, Gail Clark, Sue Scott, Jenny Stockford (Pt Chevalier) beating Claire Lines, Donna Cross, Etsuko McKessack, Vivien Young (Mt Eden) 23-4. It was a one-sided game with Pt Chevalier taking charge early on and continuing it throughout the game. Mt Eden were not able to match the pace and conceded in the 11th end.

The second women's team through to the final is Karen de Jongh, Bev Crowe, Helen van der Walt, Liz Badenhorst (Carlton Cornwall) who beat Connie Cheng, Bett Leung, Virginia Leung, Bronwyn Pratt (Remuera) in the Semi-Final 24-5. Again Carlton Cornwall proved too strong for the Remuera team taking a very strong early lead. Remuera managed to only win 3 ends and conceded in the 13th end 24-5.

Final:

The Final between Angela Temple, Gail Clark, Sue Scott, Jenny Stockford (Pt Chevalier) and Karen de Jongh, Bev Crowe, Helen van der Walt, Liz Badenhorst (Carlton Cornwall) was an end for end game but with Pt Chevaliers ends being high scoring, jumping into the lead in the 6th end and holding onto it right through the entire remainder of the game. Carlton Cornwall didn't let Pt Chevalier get on a run but couldn't manage to win the ends by enough to get them into the lead - Pt Chevalier the new Women's Club Championship Fours winners 16-8.
