13 Dec 2016
It was a weekend of mixed results for the Auckland Representative sides that travelled to Whangarei. Congratulations to the Open Women, 1-8 Year Women and 1-8 Year Men who won their respective divisions, while the Open Men finished second and the 1-5 Year Men and Women both came third.
With coaches having the luxury of being able to switch players around and also use reserves from round to round it was also an opportunity to fine tune the combinations as we look ahead to the National Intercentre Finals next year.
Report from the Open Women
Sunday December 12th saw the Auckland Women’s Open Squad step off the bus in swirling, blustery conditions at Kensington Bowling Club. After a warm welcome from Bowls Northland play commenced. Linda Ralph played former national title holder Sue Whiteman first up in the singles. Linda trailed most of the way and lost the game 12-18. The pairs of Karen Hema and Selina Goddard got home 18-12 against North Harbour. The fours had their first win as a combination over Far North 15-9.
Second round saw Linda Ralph romp home 21-5 against the player from Far North. The pairs scraped home 12-10 against Northland and a different Fours combination defeated North Harbour 22-3. Into the final round saw Linda win her singles in a close match with North Harbour 17-15, the pairs come from behind with some good saving play by Karen Hema to defeat Far North 18-15. The fours ended their winning streak with a loss to North Harbour.
With a total of 21 points Auckland Women were first, followed by North Harbour 15, Northland 13 and Far North 4. This is a good result for the first game together as a team. All games were played in good spirit in difficult conditions.
Depending on the schedule for the Auckland Centre Finals weekend the next representative fixtures are tentatively scheduled for Sunday 12th February.
