PBA Update

08 Jun 2016

Rob Ashton qualified for the Scottish Singles in Professional Bowls Association action on Monday.  NZ number three Rob Ashton won at the Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club overcoming partner Linda Ralph in a close final. This made up for Ashton losing the World Indoor Pairs qualifier. He and Shanghai singles winner David Eades lost to Gary Breckon and Bart Robertson from North Harbour. Both Ashton has previously represented the NZ PBA at the Scottish Singles event in Perth, Scotland.

GLASSEY EXTENDS LEAD AT TOP

New Zealand Professional Bowls Association number one Murray Glassey from Hawkes Bay extended his lead at the top of the rankings at the weekend when he won the local qualifier for the Scottish Singles and came runner-up in the World Indoor Pairs qualifier. Craig Merrilees surged into second place winning both of those qualifiers in Invercargill, while Rob Ashton maintained his third placing also winning the singles qualifier and reaching the final of the pairs.

There is a big shake-up of challengers for the next spot on the 2017 NZ PBA team with well performed players from last year charging up the rankings including Andrew Kelly from Canterbury, Southland's Shane Elliott, Oliver Mason from Dunedin, Hawkes Bay's Paul Sorensen and Bart Robertson from North Harbour.

Current Australasian champion Ken Walker and 2016 NZ PBA rep Andy McLean have some ground to make up to keep their spots in the NZ team for next year falling to 15th equal and 14th respectively.

There will be a very interesting race for top woman this year with Kristin Stampa, Natarsha Grimshaw, Debbie Wilford and Linda Ralph all fairly close. Stampa leads the Taranaki charge into the top 20 in the rankings after New Plymouth's Paritutu club was introduced as a venue last season.

Gary Breckon from North Harbour shares the lead for top rookie of the season after winning the World Indoor Pairs qualifier in Pukekohe but Dunedin's Ross Stevens will have a chance of overtaking him when he plays the final of the first Ranking Singles event in Dunedin held over to this coming Saturday at 3pm against top 20 player Paul King.
