The highlight of the tournament from an Auckland point of view was the win in the Men's Singles by Petar Sain from Carlton Cornwall.
After a shaky start losing the first game in section play, Sain never looked back recording five wins in a row to take the national title. In the quarterfinals Sain took on Dan Dickison (Tauranga South) and recorded a narrow 25-23 victory. Robbie Bennett (Titahi Bay) was the next victim in the semi final, before a comfortable 25-12 win over Lloyd Fitness of Taradale in the final. Congratulations Petar!
Other Auckland entrants did not fare so well with most unable to make it out of section play. The exception was the men's and women's triples teams who both reached the quarterfinals.
In the women's draw the combination of Karen Hema, Linda Ralph and Rebecca Jelley (Carlton Cornwall) had an unbeaten run through section play. In the quarters they came up against Val Symes, Rosemary Finch and Sandra Bunt (Marlborough) and lost narrowly 18 - 14. The men's team of Mike Galloway, Grant Goodwin and Gavin Brown from Hillsboro had a tight tussle in section play with two wins and a net total of shots of plus eight enough to win the section. In the quarters they played Rod Greaney, Stephen Ditfort and Ian Rule from Elmwood in Canterbury and they to lost in a tight battle 15 -12.
Well done to all participants having won through to the National finals with Auckland Centre victories.
