Success at Social Bowls Final
19 Apr 2016
Twenty teams and their supporters rolled up to Mount Albert Bowling Club for the Auckland Social Bowls Finals on Sunday 10th April, with teams representing Mount Albert / Sandringham, Glen Eden, Point Chevalier, St Heliers, East Tamaki, Ponsonby and Mount Eden in action.
The Greens held together well despite steady light rain over the initial games, and a mid-afternoon BBQ lunch break with cold refreshments broke the afternoon up nicely for the 100 plus players and supporters.
Local Mount Albert club player and computer whiz Paul Schumack posted results live at the end of each round on the big screen in the clubroom, creating a lot of anticipation as the scores came in.
Classy newcomers "MG Bowls" from Mount Albert (Peter Bonisch/Dave Kelly/Nick Margison) took out section 2 (no registered bowler in the team) while the Glen Eden Westie dream team "3 Amigos" took out Section 1 (with a registered bowler in the team) and had easily the best team shirts.
"The vibe was a 10/10 despite the wet and cold conditions" said convener Jim Gray. "There were lots of really good tussles out there and it was pleasing to see the new teams going so well, the standard and depth of social bowling is improving each year. Great to catch up with all the other clubs over a cold beer afterwards. Our club loves hosting this tournament."
Many thanks to all the Mount Albert volunteers for putting on an excellent day, tournament sponsors Bayleys Mount Albert for the great prizes, and all the participating clubs and teams.
