25 Nov 2015
The first Pairs team to get through to the Semi Finals in the Ryman Healthcare Men's Pairs at The Trusts New Open are Richard Girvan and Tom Delany (Composite) who played last years winning pairs team of Rob Ashton and Barclay Lee (Composite). Girvan and Delany proved to be too strong for the pairing of Ashton and Lee today. Ashton and Lee only managed to win 1 end with a 2 and from there it was all Girvan and Delany's game, scoring back to back 5's in the 5th and 6th ends and carried it though with back to back 3's in the 8th and 9th ends. The final score was 24-3 to Girvan and Delany.
The second pairing through to the Semi-Finals are Taylor Horne and Jessie Russell (Composite) who played Graham Skellern and John Carruthers (Carlton Cornwall). Horne and Russell started strong winning the first 6 ends 11-0. Skellern and Carrutthers fought back taking the next 2 ends bring the score to 5-11 in the 8th end, but they couldn't quite close the gap, Horne and Russell winning the game 20-7.
The next winning pairing though to the Semi-Finals are Duane McDonald and David Ross (Riverhead) who played Alister Watson and Brent Hickey (Composite). From the 4th end McDonald and Ross took the lead and held onto it to the finish of the game. Watson and Hickey took a 6 in the 14th end but it still wasn't enough to give them the win. The final score being 19-12 to McDonald and Ross.
The best for last! What a doozy of a game! Gary Banks and Walter Howden (Composite) played Steve Hoeft and Phil Aitken (Pt Chevalier). This was bowls at its finest with a real battle ensuing. Banks and Howden first on the score board then Hoeft and Aitken taking the next to ends. In the 10th end the score was all tied up 5-5. From here Banks and Howden took the lead until the 15th end where Hoeft and Aitken came back to even up the game again 9-9. Hoeft and Aitken were holding the shot in the extra end, Banks had to remove it to be in to win the game so was under a bit of pressure as he stepped up to take the shot. He was on form and took it out. It was now up to Hoeft to reclaim the shot for the win and just couldn't quite finish it. Banks and Howden took the win 10-9.
Gary Banks and Gayle Melrose are both having a cracker of a tournament with both making finals. Gayle is through to the Women's Triples Final and Gary is through to the Men's Pairs Semi -Final. Congratulations!
