Aero Bowls Triples Finalists
24 Nov 2015
The finalists have been found in the Aero Bowls Men's and Women's Triples at The Trusts New Zealand Open played today at Blockhouse Bay Bowls.
In spectacular fashion and to great cheers from the home crowd it was the local Blockhouse Bay women that stole the show with a 14 - 13 victory over the more fancied composite side of Anne Bateman, Reen Stratford and Linda Ralph. Skip Margaret Aldous, with Mary O'Keefe and Marion Vague started strong to lead 13 - 4 after 11 ends. But it was at this point that the Bateman side rallied with a 2, 4 and 3 on the next three ends to tie the scores at 13 all heading into the final end. The Blockhouse Bay women kept their cool to score the game winning point on the final end.
It was similar dramatics in the other women's semi final with the scores locked at 14 all after 14 ends. THe Counties Manukau combination of Gayle Melrose, Natarsha Grimshaw and Margaret Davies took on the defending champions Karen de Jongh, Bev Crowe and Diane Hazleton. The match that was close until the 11th end when de Jongh seemingly took control with a six to lead 14 - 9. The Melrose skipped side was not to be rolled however and scored on the next four ends to take the match 15 - 14.
In the first Men's semi final the composite team of Scott Cottrell (Waiheke), Bruce McClintock (Browns Bay) and Brian Wilson (Browns Bay) lead from start to finish against Gordon Smith, David Ross and Duane McDonald (Riverhead). With a final score of 19 - 9 the game was conceded after 13 of the scheduled 15 ends.
The second semi final was a much closer affair between Neil Clarke, Kevin Marshall, Trevor Harris (Hillcrest) and the Carlton Cornwall combination of Graham Skellern, John Carruthers and Bill Whitburn. It was Clarke that got off to the better start leading 6 - 1 after 4 ends. Players then traded shots until the 11th end when Skellern scored the maximum six shots to storm into the lead 11 - 10. That was the last score the Skellern combination would record as Clarke and his team mates regained control to score on the final four ends to win 15 - 11.
