Stu Buttar Burnside Invitation Pairs
23 Jan 2015
Burnside Bowling Club 16th-18th January
Despite a very strong contingent of eight pairs submitted by Bowls Australia it was Rob Ashton (Auckland) and Rodger Glendinning (Christchurch) who prevailed 17 – 2 over Shaun Scott (Central Otago) and Sean Ingram (Australia) in the final of this prestigious event held at the Burnside Bowling Club.
The field in what is universally acknowledged as the top pairs tournament in New Zealand was the strongest in many years with the Bowls Australia contingent using it as their final selection trial before announcing their Trans Tasman squads to take on New Zealand back at Burnside on March 18th – 20th, 2015.
After 5 rounds of section play the 8 winners of their respective section winners were divided into 2 groupings of 4 to contest the round robin post section play. This top division contained 4 Australia teams along with 4 New Zealand all of whom accepting Ashton and Glendinning had represented their country at top or development level.
Both finals combinations lost their last round of post section play but advanced to the playoff through superior shot differentials.
In the final played in front of an appreciative crowd in 35 degrees it was the match of the two of the biggest drivers (Ashton & Scott) together with the consistent lead bowlers (Glendinning & Ingram). It was the vast experience of Glendinning who won the game for his team by coinsistently out leading thye youngster and very rarely was Aston’s booming drive called upon to rectify the head. The game was a one sided affair and after 12 of the 15 scheduled ends the end was called by the opposition and it was Ashton & Glendinning’ title 17 -2 and take home the $3600 prize money.
