Finals Day Action At The Trusts New Zealand Open

Welcome to the first of the finals at The Trusts New Zealand Open for 2014. Today we have the Aero Bowls Men's Triples Final, the Ryman Healthcare Women's Pairs Final and then the Ryman Healthcare Men's Pairs Final.

Ryman Healthcare Men's Pairs Final:

Rob Ashton and Barclay Lee (Composite) vs Alvin Gardiner and Pat Houlahan (Composite).

End 1: Ashton and Lee start off the game with a single 1 - 0

End 2: Four shots puts Ashton ahead 5 - 0

End 3: Ashton off to a great start with another 4 to take it out to a lead of 9 - 0

End 4:  Another 3 for Ashton now convincingly ahead 12 - 0

End 5: A single gets Gardiner on the board 12 - 1

End 6: A hard fought for single from Gardiner takes the score to 12 - 2

End 7: A games of singles this one going to Ashton 13 - 2

End 8: Two more shots to Ashton takes them to 15 - 2

End 9: Ashton steaming ahead with Four shots 19 - 2

End 10: There's no stopping Ashton and Lee with another Two shots 21 - 2

Gardiner killed the end at 21 -2

End 11: Gardiner and Houlahan push hard and get a Single 21 - 3

Ashton killed the end 21 - 3

Gardiner killed the end at 21 -3 

Another killed end this time by Gardiner's partner Pat Houlahan  21 -3 

Once again the end is killed this time by Gardiner 21 - 3

End 12: Rob Ashton and Barclay Lee come away with a 24 - 3 win. The end result not a good indication of the hard played competition from Alvin Gardiner and Pat Houlahan.

Ryman Healthcare Women's Pairs Final:

Margaret Henderson and Doreen Garlick (Thames) vs Margaret O'Connor and Christine Buchanan (Queenstown)

End 1:  We are off and running in the final with the opening score to the Queenstown pair 1 - 0

End 2:  Single shots have been the order of the day so far as O'Connor extends the lead to 2 - 0

End 3:  The single run continues 3 - 0

End 4:  The singles come to an end with a 2 and O'Connor extends to 5 - 0

End 5:  Three shots to Margaret Henderson to start their scoring for the day 5 - 3

End 6:  A further single to Henderson 5 - 4

End 7:  Margaret O'Connor jumps ahead with 4 shots to 9 - 4

End 8:  Another 2 shots to O'Connor takes them to 11 - 4

End 9:  Henderson sneaks in with 1 shot taking the score to 11 - 5

End 10:  This shot goes O'Connor's way 12 - 5

End 11:  Another single to O'Connor takes her score out to 13 - 5

End 12:  Henderson pegs one back 13 - 6

End 13:  Things have really tightened up here with a great bowl played by Margaret Henderson to secure 4 shots.  The score is now 13 - 10.

End 14:  Another tight end with Henderson again closing the gap.  Just one shot in it now as we enter the final end.  O'Connor leads 13 - 12.

End 15:  The final end produced some great bowls and it is O'Connor that takes the end with a great final bowl.  Final score 14 - 12.  Congratulations to Margaret O'Connor and Christine Buchanan!

Two finals down and both came down to the very last bowl of the game!  Great Bowls!


Aero Bowls Men's Triples Final:

Shane McGonagle, Owen Sutton, Noel Sutton (Composite) vs John McConnell, Grant Moran, Graham Bowers (Pauanui) - Playing 15 ends.

End 1:  A tight first end with a single going to the Shane McGonagle skipped team.

End 2:  Another single to McGonagle taking the score to 2 - 0

End 3:  John McConnell's team hits back with a single of their own closing to 2 - 1

End 4:  McGonagle stretches out again to lead 3 - 1

End 5:  The end was killed and is now being replayed. And then McGonagle gets a single to extend his lead to 4 - 1.

End 6:  The singles continue, this time to John McConnell's team reducing the deficit to 4 - 2.

End 7:  The recovery continues with the score now 4 - 3

End 8:  We are all tied up at 4 - 4

End 9:  And the game is blown wide open with a 4 to John McConnell to take the lead by 8 shots to 4.

End 10:  McGonagle hits back to reduce the deficit to 8 - 5.

End 11:  John McConnell restores his four shot lead 9 - 5.

End 12:  The closing ends are approaching and the score is now 9 - 6 to McConnell

End 13:  Its getting tight once again with another single to Shane McGonagle 9 - 7

Side note:  Alvin Gardiner and Pat Houlahan have defeated Raymond Martin and Richard Corry 12 - 8 in the Men's Pairs Semi final that has just been completed.

End 14:  It all tied up once again!  9 all going into the final end.  Who is going to hold their nerve!!

End 15:  Pauanui hold shot as the skips come to the mat.  McGonagle plays the bowl he needs to drive the shot away and pick up a two!  Final score 11 - 9 to Shane McGonagle, Owen Sutton and Noel Sutton.  Congratulations.
