Large entries expected for “Friendly” Nationals
26 Sep 2014
Entries for this year’s Bowls New Zealand Heartland Bank National Open Championships are tracking ahead of the same time last year and those looking to enter should make sure they have their entries in on time.
The closing date for entries is November 8 and this closing date will be strictly adhered to by Bowls NZ so any entries received after then, will go on a waiting list.
The Nationals start on December 28, 2014, and run through until January 9, 2015. This year for the first time in its 101 year history, the event is being held on Auckland’s North Shore, with the host club being the Browns Bay Bowling Club.
To encourage players all from the same club to enter as a team in the fours, Bowls North Harbour is sponsoring a new innovation to add some extra incentive to the event. BNH has attracted sponsorship of $1,000 for each of the Men’s and Women’s Fours Teams who are all members of the same club and finish in the highest position in the fours competition.
BNH president, Dennis Matthews, said they are also investigating a similar prize for the pairs if they can attract additional sponsorship.
“This gives a real incentive for players from the same clubs throughout the country to enter as a team rather than being part of a composite team and we are targeting a significant number of entries from all centres in the fours,” Matthews said.
The host club, the Browns Bay Bowling Club, has two excellent Maniototo grass greens, a Star Weed green, an artificial green and extensive club facilities and buildings.
Club president, Frank Lockey, said they are looking to make this the “friendly nationals” and they will be making sure everyone is made welcome and well looked after.
“Planning has been underway for some time and we are well on target to help deliver one of the best national events ever,” he said.
Local businesses are getting in behind the event and The Dark Horse bar, grill and TAB, which is centrally located on the Shore, will be offering special deals and entertainment for all participants, spectators and guests during the championships.
The Birkenhead Bowling Club will also be offering evening meals at its clubrooms in Mokoia Street for players and spectators.
