28 Jul 2014
West End Bowling Club has taken out the 2014 Winter Interclub following
post section play held at New Lynn Bowling Club on Sunday.
In the final they took on Blockhouse Bay and won the title with scores of 24-20 and 29-29. They did however have to rely on a late charge in game two when they were 13-29 down after 11 ends. The team of John Hindmarch, Mike Haggart, Colin Bouzaid and Kenny Moran then went on a run scoring eight shots, followed by a three and then a five in consecutive ends to draw level at 29-29 when the bell rang. Blockhouse Bay also had a chance in game one when they held a 20-19 lead after 12 ends but it wasn't meant to be as West End held their nerve to win 24-20.
Play started earlier in the day with the quarterfinals. Bridge Park accounted for Pringle Park by a score of 30-13; 33-19 in the first quarterfinal. In the second match up honours were squared one game each with net total of shots deciding the winner - and it couldn't have been closer with eventual winners West End Warriors beating the Epsom Eaglets 20-31; 26-14 giving them a +1 net total of shots to Epsom's -1.
The third fixture had the Avondale Spiders taking on Remuera Blue and Gold Two, and it was Remuera that proved too good on the day taking the tie 23-21, 35-22. The fourth match up also had the games split with Blockhouse Bay advancing with a net total of shots of +8 (29-16; 7-28) over East Tamaki Aces.
In the semi finals FR84U Bridge Park were up against West End Warriors and Remuera Blue and Gold Two against Blockhouse Bay. West End won 24-25, 27-14 and Blockhouse Bay won in more convincing style with scores of 40-9 and 27-25.
Congratulations to the West End Warriors and the side of - Shaun Bayne, Eddie Higginson, Greg Newby, Murray Williams, John Hindmarch, Mike Haggart, Colin Bouzaid and Kenny Moran.
The format of Bonus Fours appears to have been very popular with the players involved which is great to hear.
Thank you to the New Lynn Bowling Club, Convenor Gilliam Moore and Umpire Jeanette Sinclair for a well run final day.
