WHY DID YOU START LAWN  BOWLS?

I have always been around bowls, my family play so when I was young I would watch them. I chose to start playing when I saw the success of my older sister Angela through the secondary schools competition so I wanted to get involved.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF BOWLS?

I enjoy the competitiveness of the game. The feeling of being under pressure, knowing you have a bowl in your hand that can save the game etc. Also, meeting awesome people all over the country and world who I have made great friendships with has been amazing.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPORTING INSPIRATIONS/IDOLS?

Within bowls Jo Edwards, Val Smith and my sister Angela Boyd are the people who inspire me. Their commitment, achievements and personalities make them great athletes and great influences.

OTHER INTERESTS

I enjoy painting, I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Wellington. I now work as a preschool teacher and its the best job in the world!

WHY DID YOU START LAWN  BOWLS?

During the school holidays I decided to tag along with my parents to watch the 2008 World Bowls held at Burnside Bowling Club.  I was instantly hooked the minute I walked through the gate. The high level competition and young players representing their countries made the sport really appealing to me.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF BOWLS?

I love the high performance and social aspects of the game.  It is great that bowls allows you to meet so many incredible people of all ages. Bowls has also given me various travel opportunities.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPORTING INSPIRATIONS/IDOLS?

Jo Edwards - she is a great role model for the sport and her achievements are outstanding.

Mandy Boyd – she has paved the path towards the top level for youth bowlers and she’s a great ambassador for bowls on and off the green.

OTHER INTERESTS

I love to bake, cook and spend time with friends and family.  I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary) at the University of Canterbury.

WHY DID YOU START LAWN BOWLS?

I used to play indoor in the UK.  When we moved to New Zealand when I was 12, I decided to give outdoor a go.  The weather in New Zealand is much nicer than England haha...

I fell in love when I entered the secondary school program and met other kids my age and made friends - even 8 years later we are still competing against each other, traveling around and have great memories.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF BOWLS?

The challenge every tournament / day brings. Every day is different with so many elements that can affect your performance. Being consistent is a challenge and it's that which I love. Also the good times and memories with friends over the years are irreplaceable, I wouldn't want it any other way.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPORTING INSPIRATIONS/IDOLS?

Actually a good friend Mandy Boyd has been a big inspiration for me.  She was the first from our secondary schools age group to go through the New Zealand development program to then make the Black jacks. I remember thinking about playing her over the years through those secondary school tournaments and you just never know who is going to blossom and become a star. It was a real inspiration that someone my age at the time could develop and play with the big girls at that level.

Also of course Jo Edwards and Val Smith are huge inspirations for any female players in this sport - they have achieved so much. They are always so humble with great advice and stories to tell. Every time I get the chance to spend time with them at New Zealand events and tournaments is valuable.

They really do a lot more for young players than anyone will know - the advice they give and support they show has really set a benchmark for New Zealand bowls.

It's these behaviours us development girls have and will always perform when we are at International and National tournaments.

There successes and experiences go right down through to developing young players and have definitely shaped the way I play the game today.

WHY DID YOU START LAWN  BOWLS?

I started bowls when I was 12, Dad and a few of his rugby mates signed up as a joke, went along and actually enjoyed it. With Grandad and Dad at the club I decided to give it a go (got a lot of slack from mum and the family) but it was so worth it.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF BOWLS?

The people and the contrast between bowls and every other single sport I have played. I have met so many mates through bowls all over New Zealand and even internationally which is pretty cool. I also love bowls because I am so used to playing sports that are more physical like netball, rugby and basketball.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPORTING INSPIRATIONS/IDOLS?

Casey Kopua, Gemma Hazeldine & Beauden Barrett.

OTHER INTERESTS

Love all sports especially; Netball, Touch, Rugby, and Basketball.

WHY DID YOU START LAWN  BOWLS?

My parents and grandparents played indoor bowls so I started playing when I was quite young. I enjoyed the success I had on the indoor greens, then I started watching my brother play lawn, so one day I decided to pick up a set of bowls and loved it straight away.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF BOWLS?

I love being able to meet heaps of really cool people and making new friends! It also brings such an amazing sense of pride to be able to say that I have represented my country doing something I love, and it’s a game you can excel at both individually and as a team which is both challenging and rewarding at the same time.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPORTING INSPIRATIONS/IDOLS?

Kelsey Cottrell, for someone so young to have so many achievements in bowls is awesome.
