Avondale and St Heliers Finish Season Winners
19 May 2014
Congratulations to Avondale and St Heliers for taking out the final
event on he Auckland Bowls calendar for this season, winning the Men's
and Women's Champion of Champion Pairs respectively.
Playing Blockhouse Bay in the Men's final, Ula Fusimalohi and Tom Heimuli of Avondale took the lead on the ninth end picking up a five and never looking back.
This was quickly followed by a two and then two threes as the score ballooned out to 19-8 after sixteen ends.
Blockhouse Bay's Tony Holdsworth and Doug McNamara conceded defeat and shook hands.
Avondale had had a similar experience in their semi final against Carlton Cornwall taking the game 23-5 after just 12 ends.
Blockhouse Bay beat Grey Lynn in their quarterfinal in the morning and Howick in the semi final.
In the Women's event Carlton Cornwall's Helen Van der Walt and Liz Badenhorst, defending champions, had a close game against New Lynn but scored seven shots in the last three ends to finish 18-12 up.
In the other semi final Catherine Bien and Sue Curran of St Heliers had a come from behind win over Onehunga and went into the last end all tied at 15-15.
A single shot to the St Heliers girls put paid to Onehunga's chance of making the final.
The final saw St Heliers drop a four in the sixth end to bring Carlton Cornwall right back into the game. Another two on the next end gave Carlton Cornwall a 7-4 advantage but St Heliers were in no mood to lie down and allow Van der Walt and Badenhorst to retain their title.
The lead changed several times in most ends as the players had some very tight ends and close shots.
There was plenty of talk and discussion amongst the teams as they fought for strategy.
However some great lead bowling from Sue Curran, St Heliers, gave Catherine Bien the advantage which she capitalised on and with two ends to so St Heliers lead 12-0.
A brilliant draw bowl from Van der Walt saved the penultimate end when she was one down and closed the gap to 12-10.
Again Curran drew shots and when they crossed Bien was again holding shot. Again Van der Walt tried to remove it with the final of her bowls missing the shot by millimetres.
Congratulations to both Avondale and St Heliers for fitting finals to finish the season on.
Thanks you also to the convenor, umpires and Pakuranga and St Heliers Bowling Clubs for the use of their facilities.
