Mates in Bowls Auckland Final
16 Apr 2014
Last Sunday afternoon the Auckland Social Bowls Finals were played at Mt Albert Bowling Club. Teams representing Point Chevalier, Te Atatu Peninsula, St Heliers, Balmoral, Glen Eden and Mt Albert took part. All the teams taking part had been successful in the MIB/Social Bowls/Business House Tournaments run by their local club.
This year the competition had been divided into two divisions. The first division was for teams that had a registered bowler included. The second division was for teams made up of all non-bowlers.
Play for the afternoon commenced at 12.00pm and the format was four games of 55 minutes of two bowl triples. All the games were very competitive but played in a good spirit. A number of the teams had supporters there to encourage them.
The results for each division were determined by wins, then shots for, followed by shots against. Prizes were awarded to the winners and runners up in each division. The Division 1 competition was won by Jack of All Trades representing St Heliers. They had 3 Wins. The runner-up team in that division was Petroweld Engineering representing Mt Albert. They had 2½ Wins and 32 Shots for. In Division 2, Ruff Rollers also representing St Heliers was the winner with 4 Wins and 54 Shots for. The runner-up team was Headless Chooks representing Balmoral. They had 4 Wins and 45 Shots for. St Heliers obviously had a very good day winning both divisions.
Following the prize giving everyone enjoyed a BBQ meal to close the proceedings for the day.
This event is a wonderful climax for the Mates in Bowls programme in Auckland for the season. It gives the best teams from each of the local club competitions a chance to compete against each other. It is just a pity that a number of Clubs that run Social Bowls programmes do not bother to enter their teams in this tournament.
As is the tradition, the Club of the winning team gets to host the event the following year. So we look forward to a similarly successful day at St Heliers next year.
