East Tamaki Claims First Centre Title
07 Apr 2014
The East Tamaki Bowling Club claimed their first Auckland Centre title yesterday when they won the Champion Fours at Remuera Bowling Club.
With two 1-5 year bowlers in the team, they reached the final by overcoming the strong Ellerslie team
18-11 in the semi-finals.
Meeting last years winner, Te Atatu Peninsula, in the final the East Tamaki side, while never having a commanding control of the game, managed to do enough to topple the defending champions 11-9.
Congratulations to Neville Clark, Don Parker, George Tumanuvao and Jack Huta on their title.
In the Women's event, Mangere looked like the favourites right from the onset as they cruised through to the final with scores of 17-6; 16-6; 19-8 on the way.
Their toughest game was the semi final against Hillsboro Women's narrowly beating the Hillsboro girls 15-12.
Their opposition in the final just made it through their semifinal against Mt Albert / Sandringham winning z5-14.
Onehunga and Districts, Doreen Jensen, Carol Bennett, Diana Sam, and Lavinia Ruka, have made the final of this event for the last three years and were hoping to improve on their previous second places.
It was not to be however with Emma Waerehu, Margaret Simpson, Virginia Tukerangi- Goldsmith and Moana Stainton pulling out the stops and pushing through to a final score of 18-10 to take the title.
The score line was not a good indication of the game with both sides playing some very good bowls and having some tight heads but the luck was with the Mangere team.
Congratulations to both teams on their win and special thanks to Remuera Bowling Club for their hospitality and the umpires and convenor for their hard work over the weekend.
