24 Mar 2014
The Carlton Cornwall Women's National Interclub side have been crowned national champions after two days of intense play in Palmerston North over the weekend.
Having clean swept the first round the girls went into the second round with a +30 net total of shots. In the second round the singles and pairs won but the Fours, Judi Wong, Tania Wrigley, Helen Van der Walt and Liz Badenhorst, had a battle against Wellington's Victoria Club and lost 14-7. This was to be the only loss of the tournament for the fours.
The third round saw the singles and fours win but the pairs , of Karen de Jongh and Bev Crowe, went down to Thames Coast 23-19. At this stage the side was two points ahead of Victoria with close net total of shots.
The fourth round saw once again the pairs losing and again it was to Victoria19-10. The singles and the fours had good wins in this round and the side had a four point buffer going into the last round over Victoria.
In the final round, needing at once at least two wins to clinch the title, the pairs won by 4 shots and the fours by a good ten shots.
Karen Hema, however, lost her only game of the event by 25-13 but the four points gained in the round was enough to secure the National title by four points over Heretaunga and Victoria.
Congratulations to Carlton Cornwall on their win and they will all have a point towards the new Silver Star Award. Well done ladies!!
