de Jongh caps phenomenal week

Weekend Results Wrap

18 Nov 2013

What a week for The Trusts New Zealand Open Women's Singles winner and AeroBowls Women's triples runner up, Karen de Jongh of Carlton Cornwall.

And what a birthday present for Karen  who, with partner Bev Crowe, took out the Heartland Bank Auckland Women's Pairs to cap it all off.

Playing against her in the final were Linda Ralph and Hetty Bolscher of Pakuranga, but they could not stop de Jongh's devastating game as the pair captured two sixes, a three a two and a one in the final ends of what had been a close game as they raced away to 26-9 with two ends still to play.

De Jongh and Crowe had difficulty taking the smiles from their faces as they accepted their congratulations and de Jongh was sung Happy Birthday.

That will be a hard week to top for de Jongh!

Three peat for Hillsboro Men

For the third consecutive year Hillsboro's Chris Lowe, Gregory Ruaporo and Peter Thorne have been crowned champions of the Heartland Bank Auckland Men's Triples.

It wasn't all plain sailing though and this year it was the final end which saw them snatch the victory from Grey Lynn's Sam Toloke, Kolani Maota and Terry Teiti.

Going into the last end two shots down on the card Lowe managed to pick up a three to take the game 18-17.

Ambrose takes out 1-5 Year Singles

Our new 1-5 Year Men's Singles Champion is Don Ambrose from Henderson who beat Tom Heimuli from Avondale in a thrilling final.

Trading shots one for one in the initial stages, Heimuli began to edge away with a slim 14-9 margin.

Ambrose then found the slight change in green conditions a little faster than Heimuli and soon had contriol of the game scoring all but three of the last eleven ends to finally hold the game 21-17.

Ambrose had held match point a number of times over the final four ends only to see his hard work undone by Heimuli with some accurate wresting or run shots. The final was a great exhibition of bowls which both players should be very proud of and was fitting of an open championship final. Well done to both gentlemen.
