Local Bowlers Double-up in Finals of NZ Open
The Trusts NZ Open 2013
13 Nov 2013
Auckland bowlers made their presence felt today at The Trusts NZ Open 2013, with two local bowlers each earning places in two separate disciplines' finals – men's and women's singles and triples.
An ever-humble Neil Fisher (Howick) made it through to the final of the same event he won in 2011 – the men's singles. But this year he did one better by earning a place in the men's triples final tomorrow morning.
The local bowler will skip a Browns Bay side of John Walker and Colin Rogan against David Hood (skip), Cedric Campbell and Barry Allison (Composite), and will face Tony Fabling (Hillcrest) in the men's singles final on Friday.
Hailing from the Carlton Cornwall club in Auckland, Karen de Jongh joined Fisher in bowling over the competition in both the singles and triples today to earn a finals berth in each.
De Jongh will meet defending champion Kirsten Griffin (United) in the women's singles on Friday, and skipped Bev Crowe and Diane Hazelton (Composite) past defending champions Raewyn Willis (skip), Bowls NZ Hall of Fame inductee Patsy Jorgensen and Robyn Davis in the semifinals (13-8) to secure a finals position in the women's triples facing Margaret O'Connor (skip), Linley O'Callaghan and Margaret Buchanan (Composite).
In one of the most intense games of the day, Alvin Gardiner skipped Pat Houlahan (Composite) past young guns Monte Pawa (skip) and Rory Soden (Composite) and into the final with a 13-12 semifinal win in the men's pairs.
Dashing out to an early 10-3 lead with five ends in a row, Gardiner and Houlahan were stalled in their winning spree by Pawa and Soden returning with a six-end run of their own that put them in the lead 12-11 after 14 ends.
On the final end, with Pawa holding shot and a single point separating the teams, Gardiner delivered the perfect draw shot with his final bowl to earn two points and secure another chance at the title.
Gardiner and Australian partner Allan Hilton were runners-up to Black Jacks Richard Girven and Danny Delany in the same event in 2011, and Gardiner was part of the winning Fours (2011) and Pairs (2012) sides at the National Open Championships. Houlahan won the men's singles at the National Club Championships in 2012.
The duo will play Rob Ashton (skip) and Barclay Lee (Composite) in the final tomorrow.
