NZ Open brings elite bowlers to Auckland

05 Nov 2013

The Trusts New Zealand Open 2013 will bring together some of the best bowlers from New Zealand and abroad at the Henderson Bowls headquarters in Auckland from Thursday to compete for a share in the $35,000 prize pool on offer at this unique sporting event.

Three days of qualifying matches will be played at clubs around the city, before post-section knockout rounds begin on Sunday, November 10, to find the finalists in men's and women's singles, pairs and triples on the last two days of the event (November 14-15). All six finals will be played under the watchful eyes of the Sky TV cameras, who will air the games later in November.  Click here for details.

Among the bowling elite in the competition are youthful Black Jacks Chris Le Lievre (28) and Greg Ruaporo (21), and the current Bowls NZ President Ann Muir.  Muir will be competing for the women's singles and pairs titles, having previously earned the women's triples crown in 2011 alongside Anne Bateman and Lauren Mills (Kensington).

Last year's winners were Graham Growcott (Blockhouse Bay) and Black Jack Development Squad member Kirsten Griffin (Victoria) in the singles, while Scott Curran (skip) and David Eades (Orewa) won the men's pairs crown. Anne Bateman (skip) and Nancy Jujnovich  (Composite) won the women's pairs title.

In the triples, Murray Mathieson (skip), John Valentine and John Sakey (Takapuna) won the men's and Raewyn Willis (skip), Bowls NZ Hall of Fame inductee Patsy Jorgensen and Robyn Davis (Composite) won the women's accolades.

Celebrating its seventh year on the national sporting calendar, this premier bowls event will run from Thursday, November 7 until Friday, November 15. Clubs all over Auckland - from Blockhouse Bay to the North Shore - will also lend their support by hosting the qualifying matches from November 07- 10.

Disabled bowlers will all also compete at the event in two disciplines: pairs and triples.
